All you want to know about Draconis: Creatures
After two initial creatures compendiums for Fateforge — the first focused on classic creatures, and the second delving into the netherworld — this new compendium soon on Kickstarter will feature over 120 brand-new dragons, complete with their ecology, lairs, and even a non-violent conflict system... because not every problem can be solved by fighting, especially when you're dealing with creatures this big ๐
โจ More than just a bestiary: an invitation to journey
Draconis: Creatures is not just a catalog of beasts to fight. It’s meant to inspire encounters full of wonder and mystery. This bestiary serves as a travel guide, a gallery of characters, and a collection of living stories to weave into your campaign. It’s not just about “what does this dragon look like” or “how much damage does it deal,” but about how it will affect your players’ characters, and how it may change their view of the world.
Each dragon comes with its story, legend, and rules. Each is a scenario hook or roleplay opportunity in itself.
Here are a few numbers reflecting over two years of passionate work on this book:
- ๐ 73 illustrated creatures
- ๐ 123 unique profiles with dramatic keys
- ๐ 12 lairs with detailed maps
- ๐ Around 280 illustrated pages
The book is divided into four main sections, not based on biomes or power levels, but on their narrative function in your campaign.
๐ The Familiar World: Everyday Dragons
In this first part, you'll meet dragons that live close to civilization, non-magical beings rooted in daily life. Some are beasts of burden, village guardians, or simple companions: a barnkeeper, a river sentinel, a hive dragon…
These dragons are perfect for gently introducing the setting, creating charming encounters, or laying the foundations for campaigns focused on kindness, discovery, or subtle moral dilemmas.
๐ Is the village truly protecting its dragon, or merely exploiting it for its ability to attract bees and produce vast quantities of honey? How can one be sure the dragon is being treated well? Should the heroes intervene, even at the risk of endangering the entire village's resources?
๐ The last dragon of a rare species has just died. Its vital role in the valley’s ecosystem is causing crop failure and the extinction of local wildlife. What if the only solution was to capture and bring in another dragon from a distant region to restore balance? This could be the starting point for a campaign focused on ecology and the deep bonds woven over time within neighboring communities.
๐ฎ The Arcane World: Dragons as Mysteries
This section explores magical dragons, guardians of ley lines, embodiments of spells, or living sources of arcane power. They’re often mentors or keepers of ancient knowledge, not threats.
Use them to explore the return of magic, questions of legacy, or power.
๐ A dragon has claimed a territory and forbids access by frightening away intruders. Time flows very slowly within this area, and the "time bubble" is now starting to affect the nearby town. How can the dragon be convinced to stop its magic? And what if this bubble is actually slowing down the arrival of another magical threat?
๐ The heroes are in need of answers to a riddle, so they seek out a venerable Vurtéris, a wise, speaking dragon. Reaching the Citadel where he resides isn’t too difficult. But the dragon doesn’t offer answers so easily. Before he agrees to speak, he asks each of them to give him a memory, a secret, or a personal truth, something he will keep in his memory forever.
โต๏ธ The Great Journey: Dragons as Quests
This is where the legends begin. These dragons are rare, ancient, and often unreachable. They dwell in forgotten places : atop unexplored mountains, in inaccessible valleys, deep beneath the oceans, and sometimes even in the heart of a dream.
These legendary dragons aren’t simply encountered: they must be earned. Meeting one is the culmination of an entire scenario, perhaps even a full campaign. Their presence in a story often marks a major turning point, a revelation, or the final step before the end of a narrative arc.
๐ The Briguer lives at the top of a great mountain. With each passing season, its body transforms to adapt to the environment. In winter, its wings grow, and its scales ooze a healing essence, vital for crafting a cure to a dangerous epidemic. But harvesting this winter essence could disrupt the Briguer’s natural cycle. Using it excessively might prevent its return in the spring. The heroes must choose: save lives now, or preserve the future?
๐ A dragon lies hidden in a temple at the bottom of a lake, inside a magical bubble. Near it stands a portal to another universe. If opened, strange beings will cross into this world. The dragon needs the heroes’ magic to activate the gate. But is that really a good idea?
๐ The Shadow World: Dragons as Adversaries
This final chapter introduces dragons that have been influenced, or threatened, by the Tears: a dark force born from negative emotions, capable of corrupting living beings. Some dragons have succumbed to it, becoming unstable and destructive despite themselves. Others are still fighting to hold on to their identity, torn between light and shadow.
Encounters in this section are intense, emotional, and sometimes tragic, but not necessarily violent. These are confrontations that challenge the characters’ choices, compassion, and courage.
These encounters raise deep questions about the heroes’ souls. The bestiary becomes a toolbox for portraying drama, downfall, or redemption.
๐ Can a mighty dragon corrupted by anger and sorrow, who has ravaged the region it has called home for years, still be saved? What lies at the root of its trauma? What memory of a happier time, or which dragon from its past, would it need to meet in order to glimpse a light within the darkness?
๐ The Tears infecting a dragon can also spread to the population and the environment. Imagine a dragon causing irrational rage among humans, pushing them toward endless civil war. What could the heroes do to stop it?
