Call of Adventure: Draconis classes

Welcome, adventurers, to the Deep of the Valley...

Today we are sharing with you a sneak peek of the rules and classes of Draconis, which the campaign is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter from October 22th until November 15th.

To you who have joined us on Dreanke, it is time to tell you about Draconis' game system. Draconis is a tabletop role-playing game and setting powered by the 5th Edition ruleset, though with a less combat-oriented outlook, following a pacifistic, good-natured premise.

Compatibility With 5E

Draconis is fully compatible with the 5th Edition SRD, as well as with Fateforge. Characters, equipment, spells, and creature profiles from any 5E-powered campaign can be exported to Draconis without issue. Lore-wise, characters may come to Dreanke via portals (such as Fateforge's Ateaks), which are part of the setting's lore.

➡ The spells included in Draconis are variants of spells from the SRD or Fateforge's Grimoire, fitted to Draconis' premise.

➡  3 original 5E-compatible classes are included: The Dracamicis, the Guide, and the Scholar.

🔶 The Dracamicis is a spellcaster who draws their magic from their friendship with dragons, and who can conjure a dracona—a magic avatar of their companion dragon. A Dracamicis can bond with several dragons, making them able to conjure as many draconas.

🔶 The Guide is a sort of ranger variant, redesigned to better fit Draconis' pacifistic setting. Their archetype, the Dracologist, is a dragon specialist. This class focuses on exploration, the mastery of various terrains, and advanced knowledge of their dragon companions.

🔶 Finally, Fateforge players will be familiar with the Scholar, a class for erudite characters whose core ability is Intelligence. It is a versatile class, a font of helpful information who can support fellow party members and themself to decisive effect with an array of features powered by Trick points.

Subclasses

➡ In addition to these 3 new classes, each of the base 5E classes is given a new subclass or archetype suited to Draconis' bright setting!

For example, a Paladin can pledge the Oath of the Star, a Rogue can be an Animus and animate items via a form of magic, and a Bard can be part of the College of Harmony. These subclasses are available to the pregenerated characters of the Call to Adventure, which will become available to English-speaking players very soon.

In case you are curious, here is 🌟 the full list of Draconis' new archetypes 🌟. Feel free to comment about the one you are most interested in, as I may share some sneak peeks with you...

Note that the names below are working names, subject to change.

  • Barbarians may follow the Path of the Wild-Walker;
  • Clerics gain access to the Firmament Domain;
  • Druids can be part of the Circle of the World-Egg;
  • Fighters may hone their mounting abilities and become Dragonriders;
  • Sorcerers may be Invigorated;
  • Warlocks may form a Pact of Tears:
  • And finally, Wizards, delving deep into the source of magic in Dreanke, may be Spark Seekers.

➡ 5th Edition gameplay can be made more suitable to a nonviolent playstyle with the implementation of a new mechanic called dramatic keys. Combat is still an option, but negotiation and peaceful conflict resolution are encouraged. Dramatic keys are a mechanical, concrete representation of the motivations of dragons and the means available to influence their behavior. The objectives or possible outcomes of a situation are called dramatic locks, while the means available to unlock them are dramatic keys.

A Beginner-Friendly Game

In addition to being a positive, colorful setting, Draconis is designed to be accessible to role-playing game initiates. The Call to Adventure is a starter campaign perfectly suited to role-playing beginners, whether on the players' side or on the game leader's.

Draconis also features a short Choose Your Own Adventure book, Deep in the Valley. This adventure is intended for the game leader and serves not only as a beginner's introduction to role-playing, but also as a presentation of Draconis' setting and a tutorial on the game's mechanics. It is also a prelude to the Call of Adventure, so that the leader can familiarize themself with the campaign's background and its secrets.

French-speaking backers of the Draconis crowdfunding have already received Deep in the Valley. As for our English-speaking fans, we are happy to share with you a short excerpt from this book, to give you a peek at what we have in store for you. Do note that this story jumps from numbered paragraph to paragraph, in the traditional Choose Your Own Adventure style, and that it's therefore normal that reading it in the "regular" order doesn't make sense. Still, this should give you a good idea of what the final product will be like! Also note that this translation is a work in progress.
